Every jewel needs a bit of polishing. That’s how the chair of the new Cochrane Beautification Committee looks at its mandate.
Roxanne DesRoches says horticultural and historical specialists are part of the group. They’re looking at putting flowers in green spaces, for example; and the maintenance of assets like the Lake Commando Boardwalk.
DesRoches wants community engagement in the process.
“We want everybody to be proud of their town, just as we are proud of our town, and to take action,” she says. “Send us an email if they have a great idea or if there’s something that they want to participate in.”

DesRoches says the beautification committee has zeroed in on a project it wants to concentrate on this year.
“The locomotive, our historical locomotive. So we’re looking to designate that as a park and to try to revitalize the area.”
The committee has agreed to name it Railway Park. DesRoches says it’s a good first step towards highlighting how Cochrane was built around the lake, the railway and the Trans-Canada Highway.
