The volunteer committee operating the Earl Porter Lanes bowling alley in Iroquois Falls is embarking on its next fundraising initiative.
Board chair Liz King says it’s soliciting donations. This follows a busy year that included a significant donation from Agnico Eagle Mines and two Tim Horton’s Smile cookie campaigns that brought in about $20,000.
King notes that the community came together to save the bowling alley from closure a few years ago.
“It’s been onward and upward since then,” she says. “We’ve made quite a few changes. We now have a golf simulator and we have our liquor licence now, which has made a huge, huge difference.”
Earl Porter Lanes needs a substantial amount of money for a new computer system, and then $170,000 for new pin-setting equipment.
“The stuff in behind, from what I understand,” King points out, “is more than 30 years old. It was purchased used at the time.”
King says the committee is lucky to have volunteers who can MacGyver fixes, but that can only go so far.
The group is also undergoing the painstaking task of applying for various grants.
Because it’s non-profit, any donation of $10.00 or more gets a tax receipt.
And King says volunteers are always welcome to join the board, or help in any way they can.
