It’s not only stormy weather that cancels school buses.
Ryan Hartling, the supervisor for North East Tri-Board Student Transportation says there’s a policy regarding cold weather. Buses don’t operate when the ground temperature is -36°C or colder. That’s because of the diesel fuel that runs them.
“School buses have a hard time starting and staying running,” Hartling explains, “because the fuel is stored at the back of the bus and it runs through thin lines along the bottom to the front of the engine, so they gel up in those lines and the buses can’t remain running.”
There are also concerns about students waiting for buses in the extreme cold. Hartling notes that it’s not usually very warm inside a bus, either.
The Tri-Board cancellation policies can be found on its website.
