The history of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 98 hall on Second Ave.

Nostalgia was not uncommon in Cochrane last week, when the former Legion Hall on Second Ave. caught fire.  Our local history feature this week looks back.

Roy Mitchell wrote a brief history of the Branch 89 Hall that appeared in the Cochrane Times in November, 1999.

The original Legion hall was in a converted judge’s house on Sixth Avenue. It became the Legion Hall in June, 1949. The 107 Second Ave. site was officially opened on November 13th, 1976… and the Knights of Columbus took over the one on Sixth Avenue.

Before long, changing rules about drinking and driving among other factors meant the Legion wasn’t making enough money to cover the overhead, so it sold the building.

Continued thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for access to its archives.
