Cochrane history, 1975: Indoor swimming pool proposed by municipal recreation director

Recreation issues were prominent in Cochrane 50 years ago this week, so we’re looking at them in our history series.

In the Northland Post issue of February 16th, 1975, there’s a report about recreation director Jamie Kydd recommending that town council build an indoor swimming pool.

He noted that the previous year, the weather was only good enough for 20 days of swimming at the beach on Lake Commando, and continued use of the beach threatened the lake’s beauty.

Council was also planning to talk to Hillcrest residents about its plan to establish a playground in that area, as part of a Neighbourhood Improvement project.

Ongoing thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for the use of its archives.
