Cochrane history: Chimo Carnival 1995 on thin ice, looking at alternate location

For longer than most of us have been alive, February is winter carnival month in Cochrane.  This week’s examination of local history involves the Chimo carnival in 1995.

On the front page of the February 6th issue of the Cochrane Times is a story about a possible change in location for carnival activities.  Ice on Lake Commando was still not thick enough to be safe. Community development manager Paul Bradette is quoted saying it needed at least a couple more inches, and the MTO would be consulted to analyze ice conditions.

Plan B was to use the George Ash Memorial ball park behind National Grocers.

The polar bear dip would be into a hot tub in a snow bank.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for the use of its archives every week.
